Canadien Ultimate Championship

Last weekend (August 11-14), the 2011 Canadian Ultimate Championships took place in the beautiful city of Ottawa. The organization of CUC was handled by some very experienced individuals, and the tournament offered a level of competition never seen before. In total, nearly 2500 people accessed the competition site per day, to participate or to witness the battle, that was at times merciless, delivered by Canadian teams hoping to take home not just the top honours, but also a berth to the World Championships in Japan in 2012. In fact, the winning team in each category was crowned Team Canada 2012.

In the Juniors, our local team, Kerozen, did very well, moving up 5 spots from their initial ranking (from 15th to 10th place). The winners were Shock, a Vancouver team, who beat Overdrive, from Toronto in the finals.

In the Masters, NSOM was satisfied with their 5th place finish, while GLUM (Ottawa) were not able to take home their 4th straight title. Victory slipped out of their hands against the Nomads (Victoria).

On in the Womens category was the East able to rise victorious. Capitals (Ottawa/Toronto) easily beat out Traffic (Vancouver) for the gold. Storm finished in 5th place, and Vintage in 9th.  We would like to note that Vintage won the award for most spirited team in the women's division!

It was during a hotly contested Open final full of calls that put the observers to work, that Furious George (Vancouver) maintainted their title as Team Canada, beating GOAT (Toronto) who did not give up! Our Montreal team, Mephisto, completed a wonderful summer of reconstruction, finishing in 7th place.

The heartbreaking Mixed final left a bitter taste for our Montreal team, Odyssée, who were without question the best team on the field. It was TFP (Vancouver) who took home the sought after final after a match that was interrupted due to lightning.  Odyssée didn't lose everything, returning to Montreal with the precious spirit prize in the mixed category.  We would like to highlight the impressive play of NO CLUE? who finished 4th. RIP came in 11th place and HARD finished in 15th.

Congratulations to all the teams, but even more so to the organizing committee and the volunteers who made this edition of CUC the best to date! We'll see you again in Victoria in 2012!
