Weekend clinics and conference with Ben Wiggins
Ben Wiggins hit the Ultimate scene the weekend of May 5 th and 6 in Montreal where he will leave a permanent mark.
An old Sockeye player (top open team from Seattle, and one of the best in the US and the world) came with his vast Ultimate experience, knowledge, modesty and energy. From Friday early evening to Sunday late in the afternoon, he completely donated himself to the Montreal Ultimate community. Many passionate individuals participated to the sessions, and they soaked up each lesson. On Friday and Sunday, Ben followed a structured plan which allowed time for explanation and time for discussion and sharing of experience. He claims he went astray on this plan as early as Friday upon his second sentence when he faced an interesting question from the audience which warranted deviating from his plan. This was the first lesson in adaptability from him.
Saturday, Ben turned into a training machine. With a relentless sequence of theory, demonstration, practice and play, he took us through a progression from Ultimate fundamentals to collective strategies.
From throwing with the left hand (for right handers) to voting for captains, Ben shook things up in competitive Montreal Ultimate as he shattered some of our paradigms. Many veterans and leaders of our high level travelling teams in Montreal were instructed in the ways of Sockeye, Seattle’s top men’s team, one of the best in the world. They also tested their own knowledge of the game, validated some of their habits, strategies and plays. What is your opinion on …. was their way to get Ben’s critical view on how they played the game. Ben did not have the perfect response to every question, but he took each on with great respect, developed on it and closed the loop to make sure he had addressed the question.
As teacher, leader, coach and passionate player, Ben will no doubt have influenced how the game will evolve in Montreal. Ben, thanks for your time. Rest assured that we will take your weekend teachings to the field in 2012!
This initiative from the MUCC and the AUM is yet another sign of a healthy elite program raising the bar every year. Thanks to the people behind the MUCC and the AUM.
