CAPTAINRULES KEEPER

CAPTAIN

The captain is in charge of the day-to-day running of the team, as well as on-field strategy. They are for all practical purposes, the coach. They are the first point of contact between the AUM and their players. The captain serves the interests of players, and serves as an ambassador of the AUM.

BEFORE the game:

  • Register your team in the league desired, according to the deadlines and criteria outlined by the AUM.
  • Assemble a full line-up of players, making sure to maintain it throughout the season, making sure to have at least the minimum amount of guys and girls required for your specific league.
  • Attend all required meetings (captains meeting, rules night, training sessions) offered by the AUM.
  • Make use of the resources offered by the AUM (mentors, committees, clinics) to help develop knowledge of the game.
  • Be sure that ALL information that you get from coordinators and/or AUM officials is passed on to ALL your players: as captain, you are an essential link in the AUM’s chain of communication.

DURING each game:

  • Have enough players on the field ready to play at the official start time.
  • Have the necessary equipment at each game: 8 cones (summer in 7vs7), an access to the Captain’s Manual (summer season in 7vs7), rule book, first aid kit (recommended), field permits where required (summer season in 7vs7) (the PDF files are available on the site).
  • Modify the field, along with the other team’s captain, when necessary.
  • Do the flip to establish pull/receive and sides of the field.
  • With the opposing captain, establish the exact time at which the game will end, as well as the procedure to follow in the event the established end time is reached
  • Stop the game (and/or reschedule) when continued play would damage the field. If a field is too soaked, the game must be cancelled. Then, simply write to your league coordinator on the matter and enter a score of 0-0 on the website with an average spirit. If needed, the AUM will contact you back on the matter if they decide to update the game schedule.
  • If it suits you and the other captain, modify the rules to your liking.
  • Minimize, contain, and keep track of all unsporting behaviour or dangerous plays that occur.
  • As a coach, the captain must:
    • Ensure that all players have equal playing time, as is their want.
    • Include ALL players in the game and encourage your other players to do the same.

AFTER each match:

  • Enter the game results and the spirit score, keeping to the deadline: not more than 48 hours after the beginning of the game.
  • Comment on the spirit of the game, the state of the field, or any other incidents; via the online form.

AT ALL TIMES:

  • Display exemplary spirit: the captain must be a model of Spirit Of The Game in order to pass on the values of Ultimate to all our players.

RULES KEEPER

The Rules Keeper must be a rules reference for their team. If not a “rules expert”, the Rules Keeper is expected to have an open mind towards a swift and positive resolution of conflicts, towards learning, and towards teaching the rules of Ultimate.

BEFORE the game:

  • Attend all the required meetings (rules night, training) offered by the AUM.
  • Leverage the resources of the AUM (mentors, committees, training sessions, Rulesguy, the forum) in order to gain a good understanding of the rules.

DURING each game:

  • Know all the rules of the UPA 11th edition and AUM rules. Or, at least, show a willingness to learn.
  • Know how to apply the rules on the field.
  • Have a copy of the UPA 11th edition rules with you at every game.
  • Make sure that ALL your players apply the rules, consistently.
  • Ask for the help or support of your league’s committee in order to help the games run smoothly. This could involve getting help with the rules, dealing with troublesome players, or any other difficult situation.
  • The Rules Keeper must:
    • Teach the rules and fundamentals of Ultimate to all the new players.
    • Answer all rules questions (as well as having the humility to admit ignorance and commit to finding the answer).
    • Help, when requested by the players, to resolve rule conflicts on the field.

AT ALL TIMES:

  • The Rules Keeper is an ambassador of the rules of Ultimate.
  • Display, encourage, and promote the Spirit Of The Game.
