Mila Oh Spirit of the Game Award

The Mila Oh Spirit of the Game Award

Every year, the AUM rewards teams who have demonstrated exceptional Spirit of the Game (SOTG). The teams with the best average SOTG score is entered as a finalist at the end of the summer. These four finalists are entered in a draw.  The winning team will take home the prestigious Mila Oh Spirit of the Game award, as well as free registration for the following summer.

What is Spirit of the Game?

«Ultimate relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship which places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect between players, adherence to the agreed upon rules of the game, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate adverse conduct from the Ultimate field. Such actions as taunting of opposing players, dangerous aggression, belligerent intimidation, intentional fouling, or other "win-at-all-costs" behavior are contrary to the spirit of the game and must be avoided by all players»

Ten Things You Should Know About Spirit of the Game

Who was Mila Oh (1969-2010)?

Mila was an exceptional player. She personified the very notion of Spirit of the Game, in every aspect of her life. She was dynamic, sociable, and cheerful. Anyone who rubbed shoulders with her inevitably felt like the most important person in the world. She accorded as much attention to novices as she did to legendary players. Mila fought a long battle with cancer, and Ultimate was part of her living life to the fullest until the last moment.

“I think I will be remembered for my sense of humour, my sense of fun, and my pure love of the game. I want to play good disc, I want the game to be competitive, but I also want to have fun.” Inducted into the AUM Hall of Fame in 2009 in the Special Merit: Spirit of the Game category, and named Spirit of the Year by Ultimate Canada in 2010, Mila made us laugh and made us cry, with the greatest joy! Thank you for everything, Mila!

  Final team presentation

Fraisebinettes (Thursday Montréal 7vs7)

Captain: Guillaume Halde

This team has been playing together for 10 years now and the roster has changed very little in that time period. The reason they think they are part of the final 4 of the Mila Oh Spirit of the Game prize is that they don't take themselves seriouly. Their pink shirts help in creating a nice contact with their adversaries and once on the field they play with intensity, but also with respect towards the other players. The rules are always used to ensure security and proper flow to the game, never as a strategy. The objective of the team is to have fun and that no one gets injured.

Mission Jaune Orbite (Thursday Longueuil 7vs7)

Captain : Roger d'Amour

This team is only at it's second season and is a mix of several teams. According to the captain, their secret to a good SOTG lies in the selection of players. The roster is filled with players that have the same objective: to have fun. If a situation arises the captain ensures to resolve it quickly and in a fashion that all parties are happy with.

Disk tricks 12 (jeudi Longueuil 7c7)

Capitaine: Francis Turmel

This team has been playing together for 7 years with only a few changes to their roster. They play ultimate to have fun. Their captain says that they manage to have fun even when they lose.

Next year, they would like to find new and original games to have their opponents play. They'll have all winter to think about it.

Morsure du Soleil (Lundi Montréal 5c5)

Capitaine: Felix Meilleur

This is a new team for the summer of 2016. Their roster is made up of childhood friends of the captain and pick-up players from the Loyola league last winter. The team has become a little family doing outings on weekends and activities outside the field. This team chemestry is transmited on the field with a good mix of intensity and fun. According to them, the best way to show great SOTG is to have a positive attitude and display respectful intensity.
