Mila Oh Spirit of the Game Award

DESCRIPTION | MILA OH | RECIPIENT TEAMS

The Mila Oh Spirit of the Game Award

Every year, the AUM rewards teams who have demonstrated exceptional Spirit of the Game (SOTG). One team from each league night (the team with the highest spirit average for their league night) is entered as a finalist at the end of the summer. These four finalists must then prove their merit at the annual AUM Gala in October. And it will be the members who are present at the event who will vote for the team that distinguishes itself with a VERY special performance… The winning team will take home the prestigious Mila Oh Spirit of the Game award, as well as free registration for the following summer.

What is Spirit of the Game?

«Ultimate relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship which places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect between players, adherence to the agreed upon rules of the game, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate adverse conduct from the Ultimate field. Such actions as taunting of opposing players, dangerous aggression, belligerent intimidation, intentional fouling, or other "win-at-all-costs" behavior are contrary to the spirit of the game and must be avoided by all players»

Ten Things You Should Know About Spirit of the Game

Who was Mila Oh (1969-2010)?

Mila was an exceptional player. She personified the very notion of Spirit of the Game, in every aspect of her life. She was dynamic, sociable, and cheerful. Anyone who rubbed shoulders with her inevitably felt like the most important person in the world. She accorded as much attention to novices as she did to legendary players. Mila fought a long battle with cancer, and Ultimate was part of her living life to the fullest until the last moment.

“I think I will be remembered for my sense of humour, my sense of fun, and my pure love of the game. I want to play good disc, I want the game to be competitive, but I also want to have fun.” Inducted into the AUM Hall of Fame in 2009 in the Special Merit: Spirit of the Game category, and named Spirit of the Year by Ultimate Canada in 2010, Mila made us laugh and made us cry, with the greatest joy! Thank you for everything, Mila!
